REDSKINS HOPING PIERRE GARCON'S BIG PLAY IS SIGN OF MORE TO COME

POSTED BY: PIERRE GARCON in NEWS

LANDOVER, Md. -- Big plays have been scarce for the Washington Redskins this season.

But quarterback Colt McCoy's first pass as a Redskin was just that, a 70-yard touchdown to wide receiver Pierre Garcon, Washington's only touchdown during a 19-17 Week Seven win against Tennessee.

"Yeah, I didn't know Pierre [Garcon] was that fast, first of all," McCoy said. "I told him that in the locker room, too. But Pierre is such a good, easy target to throw it to. He has great body control. I threw a little back shoulder hitch to him and he made the play to put us up, so hats off to him. He's such a great player."

Maybe it's the addition of other weapons on offense or maybe it's the loss of quarterback Robert Griffin III, but so far this season Garcon has been off his 2013 pace, which led to a team-leading 113 receptions.

More than half of Garcon's 47 targets this season have come during two games -- Houston (12) and Philadelphia (16). But good things seem to happen when he gets involved, which should be a point of emphasis moving forward.

"That was a great play by Pierre, and I would love to get him some more touches," head coach Jay Gruden said. "He is a good receiver, tough guy after the catch. Just hasn't happened for some reason.

"We have to do a better job of game planning and getting him some balls where he can get more involved in the game because he is really good after the catch. He proved that today."

Garcon's touchdown was his third of the season and marks the first time he has caught a touchdown during consecutive games since Weeks 15 and 16 of last year. The 70-yard reception was also Garcon's longest since his first game as a Redskin in Week One of 2012, when he caught an 88-yard touchdown against New Orleans.

The Redskins would like to see Garcon's consistency improve this season, but with the quarterback situation uncertain right now, that will be no easy task.

Garcon's chemistry with Griffin is well documented. With Cousins, something seemed to be missing. So it's hard to imagine that McCoy, who rarely gets to throw to the first-team receivers, would have the kind of impact that he did on Garcon's production.

"Yeah, I really don't throw to those guys," McCoy said. "That's reserved for the starter. … Maybe a little bit in [training camp], but again, that was the first time stepping in the huddle with those guys since I've been here and I'm proud of those guys. It's got to be tough for them hearing a new snap count and a new cadence with a new guy calling the plays. For them to hang in there with me felt like a positive for sure."

It would have been easy for the team to panic when McCoy entered the huddle. As Gruden said after the game, having to play with your third quarterback is never an ideal situation. But McCoy is the oldest quarterback on Washington's roster and showed great poise to lead the Redskins to a much-needed victory.

"I didn't really have to say much," McCoy said. "I just knew we had a couple timeouts available if we needed them. I just told the guys, I looked them in the eyes and said, 'Hey, I'm going to do my job, you do yours and we're going to win this game.'"
